Let me start by saying- I have had this on my list of things to do for well over 3 of the 5 years we have lived in this home. I kept putting it off because I had big plans for the space and never felt like doing all the work. And frankly, I really didn’t want to spend the money it would take to get it to the laundry room of my dreams knowing this is not the home we will be in forever. How many of you can relate?
Our laundry room is small and awkward. It sits right off the garage which over the years made it our personal dumping ground for ALL the things. Picture overflowing mesh laundry baskets stuffed in one corner, doggie bed and supplies in another, and everything but the kitchen sink thrown on top of the washer and dryer. It was a DISASTER. I wish I had taken a true before picture before I cleared out all the mess. But here is a before of the space after I cleaned up the mess.
I had high hopes to put in a built in folding table- one of the many reasons this project kept being pushed to the back burner. I priced it out and the cost and labor for what I wanted just wasn’t in the budget. That brings me to the most exciting part of this makeover- I spent less than $150! Yes, that’s right. New laundry room on the CHEAP.
I started by clearing out all the clutter and tossed anything we no longer used or needed. Once I had a blank space, I touched up all the scuffed walls and painted the garage door gray using leftover paint I had on hand. It already looks a million times better and costed me $0!
From there, I took a trip to Homegoods and grabbed most of what you see in the photos with the exception of a few things.
Next up, I installed the shelf along the back wall using lumber and hardware I already had on hand and the laundry sign. The laundry sign I picked up a few months back while at Vintage Market Days in McKinney from a shop called 12 Timbers. I staged the wall shelf with things I already had around the house. And I hung one of my beloved market totes from Apolis on the garage door. So the grand total for everything in this room with the exception of the paint, washer/dryer, items on the shelving and broom wall mount was around $142!
I am pretty happy with how it turned out considering I spent very little and it didn’t take me very long. Much prettier and functional and it will get the job done until the day comes when we sell this humble abode and move into our forever home 🙂
