How I Practice Self-Care Postpartum

“I come last.  And I am okay with it.”

As a wife and mama of two, I am guilty of self neglect.  I often come last because if I am being honest- most days, I am just trying to survive.  Self-care is something I have been trying to make a priority in my life as I know the importance a healthy and happy mom makes on the entire family.  As a stay at home mom, everyday I am nursing, wiping bum bums, cooking, cleaning, and trying to juggle working at home life as a new real estate agent, blogger and small shop owner.  I wear a lot of hats these days and taking care of myself is usually the last thing on my to do list.

I am a mom of two boys two and under (21 months apart) which means I have been pregnant at some point from 2015-2018.  I had c-section deliveries with both in addition to an invasive myomectomy surgery in 2014 so my abdominal muscles have taken a beating along with my confidence.  As someone who is typically on the smaller side, it is difficult to be comfortable in my post-baby skin.  After having my first son, I returned to pre-baby weight about six months postpartum and by twelve months postpartum I was actually a few pounds smaller.  This time around, I am just hitting six months postpartum and I am still carrying around about 14lbs of baby weight.  I am in no rush to loose the weight but I do want to feel like me again.  This past month, I have made a real effort to focus on self-care by being active again so I can get back to feeling like myself.

One of the main reasons it takes me so long to get back into the swing of things postpartum is because I am not comfortable in my clothes.  First off- I still cannot fit 85% of my pre-baby wardrobe so I basically LIVE in stretchy clothes.  Comfortable and high quality athletic wear is huge motivator for me when it comes to getting out and being active.  I was thrilled to find Lottie Life– a company whose mission is to solve this problem for moms!

Being active

Lottie Life has high quality nursing apparel that helps me feel confident in my postpartum body.  Being active is a natural part of who I am.  I enjoy outdoor activities, yoga, cycling, and working out.  As a nursing mom, I spend so much time trying to figure out what to wear to the gym or anywhere for that matter where I can comfortably and discreetly nurse my son.  Lottie Life has sports bras, tanks, and pullovers that are designed for nursing moms allowing easy access to feed your baby on the go.  And the best part is the clothes are still cute and flattering while providing the functionality I look for as a nursing mom.  The nursing tanks are soft, long, and snap down for easy nursing access.  Literally all of my favorite things to wear postpartum in one piece of clothing!  I seriously could wear this tank every day.

I love to do yoga and high cardio workouts like running and cycling so a good sports bra is a must.  Before Lottie Life, I would have to completely remove my sports bra to nurse which is not practical so the nursing sports bra is a true game changer!  It not only offers support but it snaps down like a traditional nursing bra for easy access.  Win win win!

Other ways I practice self-care

Aside from being active, I also practice self-care by reading, listening to podcasts, and spending time with God.  I love pouring into myself and my spirit when I can steal a few minutes to do so.  One thing I want to start doing is buying more audio books so I can get in my reading while doing other things because it seriously takes me forever to read a physical book these days.  I have zero time to just zone out when trying to do all the things – all the time!  I also try to zen out with a hot shower and glass of wine after the babies go down for bed and if I am feeling fancy, maybe paint my nails.  When I have help with the kids which is not often, I try and step away for a pedicure or lunch with a friend!

I am along way from where I want to be but I am feeling pretty good these days because I am taking the time to care for myself again.  Thanks to Lottie Life for helping me feel great in my postpartum body.  If I continue to make self-care a priority, I know my body, mind and spirit will reap the benefits and I will see my old self again soon.

I don’t have experience with nursing and dealing the the challenges that can bring for clothing, but that tank and a nursing friendsly sports bra is just genius!

Thank you so much for sharing!

  3. You say you are long way away, but I think you are doing wonderfully! I love listening to podcasts and reading as well. And a massage or facial every once in awhile is never a bad idea!
